Shouldn't you get the MD5 checksum from the original site? Otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose.

Re:Sheesh (2)

FWIW my download seems okay. The md5 checksum of my download is:

Re:Sheesh (2)

dead_penguin (31325) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336679)

Matching that checksum will only show other people that their download is identical to yours. If you're concerned about someone having uploaded a file to an ftp server that has some form of a trojan embedded, you really need the md5 from the original distributor. Of course you need some way of verifying that the sum you get there is actually *from* there, but that might be just a tad neurotic for a game demo!

WE SHOULD LISTEN TO THE ISRAELIS!! (-1)

egg troll (515396) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336440)

Quoted from Janes.com:

Israel has considered many options in dealing with the threat. In August, Israeli deputy public security minister, Gidon Ezra, called for eliminating the relatives of suicide bombers as a deterrent. Radio Monte Carlo on 22 August aired the possible Hamas response to such an Israeli policy in an interview with Sheikh Yassin who said: "This means that he would give the Palestinian resistance men the justification to kill all Israelis who have relatives working in the ranks of the Israeli army." Ezra also suggested burying suicide bombers with pig skin or blood, defiling the corpse and thereby making the shaheed ineligible for holy martyr status with a promised place in heaven

Re:I will buy this--- fool the first was on APPLE (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#2336613)

The original was years earlier! ?Years before Carmack or ID. The original was by MUSE software and called Castle Wofenstein. It had digital Speech (german too!) and was for a 1978 Apple with at least 48K RAM Or an Apple II from a year later. The game came out in the Apple II heydey.. It came out in 1982. It was a million dollar hit.

I played it to death and then hacked it to another v ersion with other sprites and sounds.

Guys in Michigan did the same and called it Castle Smurfenstein, with smurfs instead of nazis and happy smurf music in the beginning.

There was no Sony 386sx or any other wintel PC in existence. In fact the PC came out in the END of 1982 in November at Sears for 600 dollars and 64K ram with no floppy, just cassette tape port and no color.

you are of by GENERATIONS buddy.

I remember Carmack begging for people to help him code Wolfenstein 3d in 1992 on the San Francisco Dr Dobbs BBS. He used a NeXT and it had released versions for many systems.... INCLUDING apple II gs eventually.

Re:A little too much (2)

xwred1 (207269) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336484)

Well, I'd consider this news story to be a bit more important than the one about the general test release, due to all of the political and financial issues surrounding commercial Linux games.

As it is, the Linux port of Wolfenstein is just going to be a free unsupported thing, like Quake 1 and Quake 2 for Linux were.

Speaking of Quake III, the engine for this is based on (or utilizes directly) the Quake III engine. Anyone know what would happen if I dropped my Quake III config file directly into the Wolfenstein test? I have a pretty tweaked setup for Q3 at this point, so it'd save me a lot of time. I'll probably try it anyways, but I was curious if anyone had already done so.

Depends. The basics like movement and firing would work, but you'd be missing some commands, and have some that didn't work - use the ingame menu to set those.

It wouldn't be fatal, so give it a go. Replace the wolfconfig.cfg file with yours, and see what happens.

BTW, don't expect to be strafe jumping or anything...

Yeah, the basics all look the same. It crashed and burned on some of the vm and other settings, so I just went through and configured again by hand. It's not a big deal.

R.T.CastleWolfenstein fastest on Mac RISC platform (-1, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#2336471)

Mac RISC is fastest Retrunrn to Wolfenstein engine.

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/osx/

has b7 of the mac client. the pc files you need are hosted in a 69 megabyte mac download at ExtremeSims gaming site.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is fastest on Mac hardware. The developer at id released a few versions this week for Mac OS X (FreeBSD derivitive) using OpenGL and optimized for multiple processors.

In standard configurations of resonable resolution a modern mac acieved over three hundred percent more animation frames than a wintel box sporting dual 800 Mhz Pentium.

The MP nature of the Mac and is highly vectorizable Altivec processors designed to be used from C source code versus hand tweaked MMX assembler give a phenominal edege to the mac.

The mac has usually performed best but at a high cost. This day is no different.

But I would bet a Dual 1.3 Ghz Athlon MP with decent ram and the same video card as the mac would also get less perfromance.

Slashdot mentioned this this week but no people chose to remark on the one of many hundreds of existing bechmarks that show off the G4 chips. (MPEG2 compression, ByteMark, Photoshop filters, and many more exist.)

Everyone should give this game a try. I've played it all week.

One problem i see on the net a lot is that newbies continually think its fun to join the Nazi army and then act as sabateurs and spies. The game almost seems to promote this with its stupid "free kill" mode between battles where shooting teammates is not tabulated. Luckily "limbo" mode lets you switch viewpoints to other players eyes and learn where the allied spies are hiding... typically at the bottom of stairwells with machine guns.

Re:R.T.CastleWolfenstein fastest on Mac RISC platf (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#2336622)

They are cooler than cool, uniform wise.... there is a book, now stolen, from the unprotected archives of the University of Michigan, that shows ALL the uniforms of all the german troops of every rank and every season.

The ultimate: the White winter SS Officers Uniform.

Its stunning and so futuristic. It looks like something out of a lucas sci fi movie.

I went back one year to look at that book and its gone. Its gone along with lots of other priceless ww2 era books.

Mirrors? (2)

x-empt (127761) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336485)

Well, what an idiot...... "LETS POST A LINK DIRECTLY TO THE MAIN FTP ON SLASHDOT!"

Maybe someone kind enough to share might want to mirror the linux release. This is crazy that jon_c posted a direct link and michael approved it.

Maybe next time posting the game to freenet first would be a good idea. Freenet is now a stable enough network to handle a /. load IF more people would utilize it.

Re:Mirrors? (2)

NonSequor (230139) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336516)

It's rather simple, he could have posted a link to a web page with the link on it or he could have posted the direct link. Either way, everyone is going to follow the link. Either way the ftp server gets slashdotted. It doesn't really make any difference.

Re:Wow (1)

cruelworld (21187) | more than 12 years ago | (#2336542)

RTCW is actually pretty disappointing. It feels like a Q3A mod, rather than a new game. The graphics are poor, the textures poor quality and the sound is pretty average. Urban Terror looks so much more polished.

It has some neat tricks, like the flamethrower and the air-strikes, and the machine guns are fun. The game is Assualt based (as in Unreal tourny), but so far seems pretty tame. And if all engineers can do is plant and dis-arm dyanamite...why bother?

SP might be cool, but the RTCW MP Test isn't anything to get excited about.

Or is it that you have no idea what you are talking about.

sihk, hindu, or muslim... if they have a towel on their head the rest of the passengers could cause a major disturbance in the air and create a safety situation.

I say play it safe.... no groups of arabs sitting together in first class unless they take off their towels.

Yeah right, and life is so simple these days!

Oh, wait... perhaps it isn't? Unless you're living under a rock, you'll know that there is overall agreement that the terrorists were professionals who had planned their attack very carefully and thoroughly.

And, as we know, they passed the security checks, no matter how sophisticated (or not) they were. Now, one rather obvious conclusion to draw from this is that terrorists are well capable of striking with surprise. So, simpletons like you may lean back and follow their simple i will not get on an airplane with a towel head on it precautions. But it only makes you look like a moron, it doesn't make your life any safer.

"4 Arab-American Passengers Questioned"

Killian said that under Federal Aviation Administration rules, ``the airline has no choice but to re-accommodate a passenger or passengers if their
actions or presence make a majority of passengers uncomfortable and threaten to disrupt normal operations of flight.''

As you can see.. its a matter of safety that disruptively dressed people CAN be asked to leave a plane if passengers are unsettled.

towels on heads are unsettling.... period.

Its not discrinmination... its safety.

Anti-German Propaganda (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#2336624)

Why hasn't this series died? I will give it credit in that it is cutting-edge gaming. But it boils down to that fact this is anti-German propaganda. It is revolting. After playing this game, I think many people will go to Germany expecting everyone to have horns and devil tails.

The fact is many of the soldiers in WWII on both sides had families - mothers, wives, and children. Many soldiers in WWII on both sides fought what they believed in (and sometimes not). Remember too, that a lot of the German people did not know of the internment camps. They were all just normal people fighting for their country - they weren't evil.

And what if the roles were reversed? What if you played the game as a German soldier killing "greedy" Jewish businessmen? Imagine the uproar! So why is it different when you kill those "evil" German soldiers?

Remember this when you go to a Hollywood film about WWII and it claims to be based on a true story. Yes, there was a World War II, but that's precisely where the "true story" part ends.

You make an excellent point. Isn't it ironic how George W. Bush slobbers over the ragheads saying that there are "good Muslims", "not all Muslims are bad" blah blah blah. Hahaha.

How come we never hear the media bosses remind us that there are "good Nazis" or "good Japs". Only a very few of the Nazis were bad. Most of them were good people. But it is not politically correct. It is OK to demonize the Nazis but in the same breath tell us that "Muslims are good". I guess the Nazis had the misfortune of being born white. In our TV world, any dusky chocolate drop is "good" on their skin color alone, whereas Nazis continue to be villified.

There are good Muslims. There were good Germans. There are no good terrorists. There were no good Nazis.

These are easy things to understand. What I don't understand:

Which of the above statements confuses you? Do you realize that this racist apologist shit makes you sound like a Nazi yourself?

There are good Muslims. There were good Germans. There are no good terrorists. There were no good Nazis.

Clearly you're the idiot. There were plenty of good Nazis. A large percentage of Germans were Nazis. Just as there may be plenty of good Muslims. And a large percentage of Arabs are Muslims. Do you know the difference between race and ideology?

Note: DISABLE LIBSAFE BEFORE PLAYING (2)

If you're like me and have added libsafe to /etc/ld.so.preload to watch for buffer overflow attempts (an awesome package, I might add), you'll get the following when trying to connect to a game or host your own, which of course exits the game:

Libsafe violation detected on [machinename] at Sun Sep 23 00:25:03 2001
Libsafe version 2.0
Detected an attempt to write across stack boundary.
Terminating /usr/local/games/wolfenstein/wolf.x86.

i don't mean to pry, but it looks like you ran the game as root. for the love of mike, don't do that.

The game was not run as root. All libsafe logs look like that.

Mod people whom you disagree with as trolls, flamebait, or offtopic? You will be meta-moderated accordingly.

Did you know that if you metamod more than two items as unfair then your entire submission is thrown out and your karma is penalized? Given that a LOT of people down-mod stuff they disagree with instead of just responding, metamod is now completely useless.

Productivity-- (1)

When they first released the Windows version, I rebooted to Windows (first time in months) to try it out. It was awesome. I thought I wouldn't get anything done. Then Windows crashed. I tried again, and Windows crashed. After 10-15 crashes I decided not to bother anymore. Productivity was restored.

Now that it's available for Linux, productivity is guaranteed to decline. *sigh* Oh well. :)

This game, much like other Open Source simulation tools such as Flight Gear, may be used as terrorist training tools by Osama bin Laden and his cronies.

Follow the instructions and make sure the user running wolf has write access to the wolf installation. i.e. install it as yourself in your home directory.
