Science & Industry 0.97b Half-Life Mod Release

michael posted more than 10 years ago | from the industrious dept.

First Person Shooters (Games) 110

An anonymous reader writes "Science & Industry, a teamplay mod for Half-Life, has been updated. S&I is one of the oldest Half-Life mods: it was there at the first Valve mod expo back in 1999, but it hadn't been updated since 2001! A new version is finally being released today. Science and Industry is a mod in which players assume the role of Security Officers in one of two rival corporations striving for domination in the cutthroat world of chemical and weapons research and development. Learn more about the mod on its website. This new version works for both WON and Steam versions of Half-Life. For a full list of changes, either check the Science & Industry website, or this detailed forum thread."

I haven't played Half life on over a year, but I remember playing the original science and industry mod, and it wasn't very good. At best, there were 4 to 6 servers online at any given time, with no more then 2 or 3 players on each. The guns were fairly lame, but worst of all, it took 536 bullets to kill anything. I shouldn't be able to take 4 rockets to the chest before I die.
Worst of all, once a side started to win, the new weapons gained were so overpowering that the other side rarely had a chance. I hope they fixed some of these problems.

Meh, I like the small servers (as long as their is always people playing. That way I'm able to build a tight knit of friends.

Thats why I like cube, for more of the social than the gameplay

Just my two cents

The same community can be easily built on a large server, especially one that keeps stats. Drippy's is an example for TFC, check it out at http://www.lunaticrage.com/drippy/

Re:Meh! (1)

frostbane (660953) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810464)

I don't know why someone modded this guy down. Everything he said about the mod is true. Now, don't take me wrong I enjoy it, but once one team takes an advantage, with all the scis and most of the tech already researched, it is all over. You don't even have to play the rest of the map. When one team has all the armor, health and regen upgrades plus a full team of scis continuously putting out new weapons there is no chance for the other team to win. Especially since all the winning team has to do is protect the scis.

SI was never a huge mod, it had a small community with a couple of servers with only a couple of regulars, but it was nice. You got to know the other people playing and most of the time your teammates would actually know how to play the game well (ie focus on upgrades before weapons). Hopefully this new update brings forth a new group of SI players...

Re:Meh! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810736)

Read the list of changes to 0.97b:

"The losing team isn't rewarded with extra strength and damage. The winning team isn't rewarded with a research gap - research speed is constant."

Re:BAD MODDING ALERT (0)

It's a troll because whatever aesthetic dislike the original poster has for the blue used, the pages are still very easy to read - even for a fellow like myself with a combination of bad eyesight and sitting 2-1/2 feet away from a 17" monitor. Not to mention the fact that very few people seem to complain about the colors and therefore can't be that offensive. If there were "-1 stupid" or "-1 pointless" mods, those could easily apply as well.

Oh yeah, and it's off-topic to boot.

Re:Uh... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810700)

Actually, what made it news was that this was the first update in over two years.

Yesterday, everyone believed this mod was dead. Today, it's not. And trust me, this is awesome news, this mod had a lot more flavour and fun teamplay than Counterstrike ever could hope to have.

Yet, it's not as structured as TFC, which is good, IMO. Anyway, next LAN party you find yourself at, TRY IT.

'Actually, what made it news was that this was the first update in over two years. Yesterday, everyone believed this mod was dead. Today, it's not. "

I see, so this is really just a well placed PR move by 3D Realms to keep us from doubting the inevitable release of Duke Nukem Forever. Very clever indeed!

We also have game posts on slashdot, some of the major mods that people is along the same lines.

Play the mod (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810455)

It's better, more fun, and more complete than Counter-Strike.

Counter-Strike, btw, was a Half-Life mod and is currently the most popular FPS by far being played. There are twice the number of players of any other FPS despite its age.

Totally relevant, and front page material.

Seriously, I'm fucking happy to see this on the front page, as I don't ever look at games.slashdot.org and Half Life is still the only game on my PC that I play on a daily basis.

Best bang for my buck, ever. And S&I was one of the old favorites when we LAN partied. Last party or two^Wfour, it hasn't even been an option. Now it is.

Slashdot, thank you for putting this up. I wouldn't have known otherwise, I moved S&I off my list of things to think about ;->

This is pretty cool, considering that I was a die-hard fan of the mod. I don't know what was so charming about it... it might have been the sound that played when you hit a scientist. It might even have been the community; nobody every played it and so all the Blueyonder servers had the same people on all the time. If you've never played it, download it now. I wonder/hope they will be porting this to Half-Life 2 when it comes out!

Science and Industry, another good mod (3, Interesting)

BrookHarty (9119) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810375)

I perfer SI over Sven co-op, but lately I'be been playing some Natural Selection halflife mod. NS really is a blast if you have some good teammates and a commander who builds correctly and in order.

I think thats what makes SI and NS so much fun, the build aspect. Not just a FPS, but you have to work and build better weapons. You dont get the "AWP" frenzy like CS, as some servers even ban the AWP for that reason.

For a few years, people said "wouldn't it be cool if people could play C&C in FPS mode?". Then C&C Renegade came out, but it didn't really have the build out like C&C/Red Alert.

Also, is it HL Mod day, nice :)

Re:Science and Industry, another good mod (3, Interesting)

interiot (50685) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810476)

Natural Selection owns.

But yes, it's less of a one-player-dominates-all game... On the alien side (where resources are evenly distributed across all players and each must decide which structures they think would best help either them personally or the team as a whole), since resources are spread evenly, and resources are key to getting good upgrades and thereby winning the game, it's not enough that one player spend his resources wisely... the team only wins if the team's average skill is higher than the other team's. (this seems to be true for the marines as well, but it's not obvious to me why, as only one player on the marine team makes decisions regarding resources)

On the other hand, this shifts the the game quite a bit. Instead of becoming the best individual player you can, the key to ensuring victory is to remember which players on a particular server are better, and to join the team at the begining that contains the higher average skill.

Re:Science and Industry, another good mod (1)

MrBlic (27241) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810811)

Natural Selection is done by a seriously cool group of people. Flayra (the head developer / producer) has some great philosophies on how the good of the group is the good of the individual, and some roles on the alien side are to protect the other players. It's all very wholesome in an incredibly fast paced violent way.

Re:Science and Industry, another good mod (1)

placeclicker (709182) | more than 10 years ago | (#7811144)

the only real problem for marines, which seems to unbalance the game, is they require a good leader and player for the commander. This is why aliens usally win on pubs, because the comm's, just suck.

If you play on a clan server, marines win a TON more.

First of all Sven Co-op is a co-operative mod, not a deathmatch mod. Comparing Co-op with deathmatch is not very fair.

Secondly, there is actually a c&c map for Sven Co-op called cnc_defense which can be found here:

valve doesnt deserv any respect from the nix community. after 5 years of asking for a native port what answer we got ?

HALFLIFE 2 will be Windows centric too
gg valve i wish you a nice 2004!!!!

Re:so whereis the Linux or Freebsd port ? (1)

crypt1c (688858) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810608)

as soon as they saw that it ran somewhat "ok" in wine they canceled, because valve cant program their way out of a paper bag with a light, compass and a map

Re:so whereis the Linux or Freebsd port ? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810703)

well i dont play CS, i used too. It was a matter of CS/windows or moving to nix side. But many friends of mine still do. And since its one of the most played games ever, i think they already fullfill their paper bag ? dont you think so ?

and for the offtopic moderation let me tell you,
what matters a game topic in slashdot if like 70% of the readers dont even cant play at all? (im throwing this number out of my ass, but im pretty sure many feel the same as i do)

For those that have a transgamming subscription
yes CS/HL runs in linux with winex, but runs bad as shity. Theres no way to even compare!!

Not to say aboutit in Freebsd, its unplayable!!

what triggers me most, is that this game is based on quake2, that is gpled from long long time..

it would be a matter of pride putting 2 fellas working a port for it ? that shows their respect and those many letters of consideration ppl had wrote past this years. So dont came to me with that "money driven, econimics principle that they are a comercial bussiness company". They are the responsible for one of the best games ever, more supporters worlwide, but even so they dont care about the 10% that are even elegible to play

Re:so whereis the Linux or Freebsd port ? (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810613)

The fact that valve did not release a linux or freebsd port and it has not affected them tells more of the linux and freebsd community then valve. I do not believe they will have any problems making a ton of scratch from hl2 when it comes out.

Re:so whereis the Linux or Freebsd port ? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810735)

The fact that valve did not release a linux or freebsd port and it has not affected them tells more of the linux and freebsd community then valve. I do not believe they will have any problems making a ton of scratch from hl2 when it comes out.

so if you think that us (linux, freebsd, whatever runs has 3d opengl hardware support) dont affect and deserv valve.

What stops them from doing a port then?
1) they just dont care
2) they think nix community is shit
3) they have bigger things to think about it
4) there will be no gains on porting halflife engine native, even if you had ported an halflife server version and quake2 engine is ported nativelly nix and gpled and theres all sort of linux clients for major quake3 based games mods or quake3 based engines like CoD, BF1942, ET, MoHAA and etc

any answer of those goes in line with my first comment
"valve doesnt deserv any respect from the nix community."

so what is your point again about what im not aware off?

I think it will run using WineX. Actually, I am sure of it, I did it 8 months ago. It didnt run very well.

I do not believe there is a linux native version.

As for demo/shareware, there are some very crippled, old demos, but they probably will NOT work with linux (at least not well), and are probably not capable of playing any mods.

So, the answer to your questions, in order are: "Yes, but not native" and "You dont want any demo version on linux".

Hope this helps, Brushfireb

Re:linux? (0, Troll)

Re:linux? (3, Informative)

77Punker (673758) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810615)

You can run the original with WINE (not wineX) just fine, but the anti-cheat will say you're cheating. I don't know if Steam (the new frontend thingy) will work or not. Just play single player or join servers that aren't running anti-cheat and you're set. Linux Games [linuxgames.com] has a hosted site or something on the toolbar to the left that has detailed intructions that are updated fairly regularly for playing Half-Life with WINE.

Re:linux? (1)

absurdhero (614828) | more than 10 years ago | (#7811431)

I have run it just fine in wine and winex. Each of them has a separate set of minor bugs, but it functions well with both. You must have opengl compiled in and have your graphics card set up right in linux first or you will be running in a horrible software mode with a lowish framerate.

Testament to a well done game? (2, Insightful)

Zro Point Two (699505) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810482)

I think that since mods for this game are still being updated/released, it's a good way of telling Valve that the gaming community likes what they've done.

In a similar way that /. uses the Quake rocket launcher for it's game post icon.

Keep showing them what we like, and maybe one day they'll really listen and not bring out as bad a game as Dikitana.

Re:Testament to a well done game? (1)

irc.goatse.cx troll (593289) | more than 10 years ago | (#7811262)

I think its sad that they made such a great game. If all of these mods were based on a game that is owned by someone who believes in openness and freedom (like John Carmack of IDSoft) we'd be better off. We wouldn't have to worry about FUD being spread by calling anticheat enabled servers 'secure' vs 'insecure', we wouldn't have to worry about getting false banned for 5 years due to a software bug. we'd be able to play in the operating system of our choice, and benefit from community enhanced engines.

Best example: Quake1.
check out fuhquake.net and see what they've done with quake source. Far more things than I can list, but some good ones: ability to jump to arbitrary times in demo playback (no more sitting through an hour of demo to get to the frags you want), ability to load HalfLife maps and wads/textures/sounds (yes, that means playing de_dust in the counterstrike-esque TF mod, TFstrike. I'll send a movie of it if someone asks.), much better graphics, ability to save jpeg screenshots, much much more.

I mostly agree with you, but I think that the problem isn't that valve aren't open, it's that the mod authors don't care that they aren't.

I care, and that's why I won't code for hl.

Two new (and apparently a third) new HL mod releases.

Nice.

DoD 1.1 should be coming soon. Now if only there was a WON version of CS I could play so I don't have to go through crappy Steam....

What is the difference between CS WON and Steam?

WON is still up.. (1)

Archwyrm (670653) | more than 10 years ago | (#7811550)

..for the time being. I was just playing some TFC on WON a few hours ago. Why? Because the old version still works quite nicely with wine.

Oh, and the main difference between CS WON & Steam is a riot shield and a few tweaks. You are much better off playing TFC anyway. ;)

The WON version (1)

xQuarkDS9x (646166) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810504)

How's the WON version supposed to work? As I understand it VALVe has already shut down or will soon be shutting down the WON servers for good, therby ensuring everyone HAS to use the smelly pile of goo that is called STEAM.

WON still works from what I've heard. Steam works just fine for me and it only really had problems when everybody was switching and it got overloaded. They say they won't remove WON until Steam is working like it's supposed to work reliably.

I want my subscription fee back. I was told in no uncertain terms that paying meant not having to suffer ads.

That this article 'bout Half Life has an icon being the Rocket Launcher from Quake 3. (sigh).

It's an FPS. Quake3 is an FPS. Having trouble seeing the connection?

I've always had a soft spot for this mod, it's fun to play and is rather original. One of the better mod's for halflife. I suggest you all check it out. It's worth a gander.

GameTab has a torrent [gametab.com] and seed for the Science and Industry mod. Enjoy!

Babylon 5 game out also (2, Informative)

AIX-Hood (682681) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810752)

Since we're talking about games on a slow news day, there's also a Babylon 5 game which a lot of people are downloading. It seems to have been done by a Russian guy who is ending the project and is putting out what he's got. Link and info are here: http://www.aixgaming.com/filerush/download.php?tar get=ifhsetup.exe [aixgaming.com]

I don't understand. (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7810764)

I understand why this would be posted to games.slashdot.org. What I don't understand is why it is on the front page of slashdot.org. Some Half-Life mod went inactive for 2 years and suddenly gets an update. This is front page news in what way? Where is the bitchslap function for "editors" (I use the term very loosely)??? I hope VA Software goes bankrupt [yahoo.com] .

Is this legal? (-1, Troll)

Pan T. Hose (707794) | more than 10 years ago | (#7810829)

In the unavoidable context of the ongoing DMCA abuse, I have only one question: is this "mod" legal? Any IAALs?

I had to read the summary several times to get that this wasn't about radioactive decay or some medical stuff. After all, there was the word science in it.
