An anonymous reader writes "Do you pretend you are the Hero of Time in your sleep? Are you the biggest Zelda fan on the block? Well, take a gander at what this Zelda fan owns... a real-life replica of the famous Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda series." The article mentions: "After a ten-month wait period and a £1,800 transaction (around $3,300)... [a Scottish] blacksmith provided updates of his progress during the one-and-a-half-month forging process."

      but, i must say that master sword must be damn heavy. that's a fat blade. i couldn't figure out from the pictures whether the guard was plastic that had been chromed or if that was a wax mold the smith used in the forging process. the smith must not be terribly proud of it, as it isn't featured anywhere on his site (unlike a lot of other designs).
      • I agree about the proud factor. In the news site, he has picks of all kinds of designs, including various Katanas. But no mention of the fabled Master Sword. Still, I think it would be pretty cool to have. Unfortunately, 3,300 USD is a lot of dough.

          I emailed the man who designed / constructed the sword.

          He said he has since lost the mold. HOWEVER, because so many people are emailing him about it (I'm assuming because of the planetgamecube.com article), he's going to make a limited edition.

          He says the adjusted price would be 1100 Euros. But he wants to know about how many people would like to order it.
          • 1100 Euro is not a bad price for a custom made sword of this quality. I am already a customer of Rob (the bladesmith), having bought two swords a couple of years ago, a longsword and claymore, and I'm very pleased with the quality of his work. These are real swords, not show-pieces. He customizes the swords to your wishes, e.g. with special engravings or customizing the length of your two-handed sword to your size. Recommended.

        Well, consider that his core customer base is probably not too interested in him creating replicas of video game swords. In some ways, having that credential could actually be a bad thing for his business. Hardcore enthusiasts might think he doesn't take his craft seriously. Yeah, we're talking about people being anal on multiple levels, but people have gotten bent out of shape over s

        Read the comments on the planetgamecube.com forums (the thread is linked to from the news story, which is linked to in the /. announcement.) The guy is a PGC regular: He says it weighs 18 pounds, and swings great. Also said that it sounds great when it slices through the air. :) Now, if only I could get one of those....

        The ALT tag for the image identifies it as the wax mold.
  • Seriously, I've been wanting to get into collecting swords. I've been searching for a Zelda replica, but to no avail. Within the next year, I want to buy a "Highlander" katana, and a sword from Lord of the Rings.

    But THIS one tops my list. I've loved Zelda since the original (with Link to the Past being my favorite game of all time).

      A friend has a Highlander katana...I'd expect it to be pretty cheap when compared to a LotR sword, or certainly anything like the Master Sword, just based on complexity.

      Best thing about that katana, though...it looks nice, sure, but the thing is incredibly light and well-balanced. Holding it makes you want to USE it.

      • I have the highlander katana, I bought it at a store called "Natural Lights" in Pueblo, Colorado. Only ran me a couple hundred, and it's decent quality for a show-sword. Just don't expect to fight with it :)

      People collect what people like. I won't tell you what not to collect, but I will ask you to consider some words of advice from someone who has been ther.

      1) Forget Movie/anime/game/etc... swords.
      They neve retain any value, everybody who wants one will have one, and it will hane no real story with it; except "uhh, it's like the sword from blade." or whereever.

      2) Look at swords that have been around a while, get some history. example:

    What is this a vorpal +5 or something? $3300 seems a little steep to me unless it's got some special powers. I mean, this [yahoo.com] will slice through any material known to man and it's only $17.99.

      $3300 for a brand new sword is pretty cheap. Do you have any idea how much a brand new first-rate katana costs, for example? A *good* one by a well-known smith will set you back 5k-100+k dollars. You *could* go down to your local knife store and get a mass-produced sword for what, $100-200, though.

      It's not unlikely that he put several hours into it. I've read that it can take at least a hundred hours to make a sword with the traditional methods. If you think about it from that perspective, a custom sword, at 100 hours, at $30 an hour, seems reasonable. It's a one-of-a-kind blade, and looks to be quite well made.

      Seriously thoug, for a custom sword, thats not too bad. I mean you have to do the intitial design and molds. etc/ And they are pretty tought to make.
      I know a place that will charge you just to look at your design.
      15000 for a custom sword. In this case when I say custome, I mean your design, anf the your measered, and it fits YOU.

        Time to cancel that credit card, NOW, Manny/Susan. Your link just allowed (with the help of a VERY stupid ecommerce website) people to gain access to your credit card info. :(
      • In fact, they originally made one of those swords because Greg [reallifecomics.com], the author of Real Life Comics [reallifecomics.com], requested it.

        He worked out a deal with SwordsOnline.com to draw The Forge [weaponmasters.com] for them, and they paid him in store credit. As I recall, the Buster Sword was the first sword he had them make for him.

        His sword collection is pretty ridiculous, but it's awesome all the same. =)
    • Cloud's sword was actually very thin, so despite its size it shouldn't be that heavy.

    Some day, some poor anthropologist is going to find this, and write a paper wherein they detail their amazing discovery that Zelda wasn't just a video game, but a true story, and here's the sword to prove it!

    Sad part is he/she/it might be believed; more people believe in Atlantis on less evidence...

      Not to nitpick but this sword is actually the Sword of Time from Zelda: Ocarina of time.

      The only master sword that could every shoot beams was in Zelda: Link to the Past (and 4 swords, the GBA conversion of same)... the swords in Zelda and ZeldaII were never referred to as Master Swords, though the title probably comes from the translation in Zelda of the text "Master using this and you can have it", which is what the ghost of the swords

  • What they hell are you gonna do with a sword? You're not gonna fight with it. (Unless it's a regulation fencing blade or a kendo stick, or whatever those dorks in the SCA wail on each other with...) What are you gonna do, hang it over the fireplace in your medieval castle (read: apartment) to complete the decor? Yeah, I'm sure it'll look great with the X-Files posters and Yoda figurines.

      Sure, 99% of the posters here that DO buy swords might fit your description.

      But I know someone (that is the opposite of a geek) that has at least 4 katana blades (2 of them functional, 2 of them display).He's is moderately wealthy (not rich, but well off). And yes, they do add a nice but of atmosphere to his flat.

      He's into fencing, and also knows how to handle a katana. He's also trained (via a wooden sword) and can do some nice moves. I don't know how'd he stack up in a real fight

          OK, then you spend your money on tax defered investments. In the meantime, with my well-paying job, and my retirement account (which will grow to more than enough by my retirement), I'll spend my extra money on things that I like... and I like collecting swords. That's where I've decided I get the most enjoyment out of
    • People buy display sword for the same reasons others buy a painting, or a sculpture. Swords are very artfull, if you don't buy crappy cheap over mass produced ones.

    Alright, you pay 1,800 for a sword and it's not even the best one possible.

    Here's [zeldacentral.net] what you do. Use some blue body paint on a chicken and start the whole trading process. Walk around asking if anyone will trade you something for your blue chicken, then trade whatever they gave you for something new. Eventually someone will gove you a broken sword. Stop right there for a minute.

    If you're having trouble with this so far, go to a flea market or a swap meet. Someone will give you something for a blue chicken.

    Anyway, now that you have a broken sword, take it to a very very big blacksmith with bad eyes. He will help you only if you can cure his condition. For this, we need the assistance of a fat, fishy smelling, naturopathic [anma.com] optometrist.

    This doctor will insist that the blacksmith needs eyedrops made from frogs, so get an "eyeball frog" from him and take it to the pharmacy. Since this guy is also a well respected fishmonger, you may also want to pick up some salmon steaks for dinner [foodnetwork.com] but don't waste too much time as the frog has an extremely low shelf life.

    After the pharmacy mixes up the frog eyedrops compound, hurry over to your gigantic blacksmith and give him the medicine. Remember, time is of the essence as the drops (and your dinner) will spoil. They will (miraculously) work and allow him to see. Ask that he immediately begin work on your sword as thanks.

    Forging the sword will take 3 days as opposed to the one and a half months for the Master sword. It also may be cheaper depending on how much your out-of-network optometrist charges you. One more thing, you won't be able to wield a shield while using this sword, but I don't think that should be a problem. Enjoy.
  • IANAMetallurgist, but I'd pay serious money for a life-size Soul Reaver. There's plenty of reference pictures to go off, maybe Crystal Dynamics would be kind enough to provide the 3D model from LoK:Defiance... I'm going to see if I can make this happen.
    Anybody who could help me part from my money is welcome to contact me. Particularly if you're a blacksmith.
