UT2004 Editor's Choice Edition Released 31

Neophytus writes "Earlier today the 'Editor's Choice Edition' addon for Unreal Tournament 2004 was released to the public. The official bonus pack contains new maps, models and vehicles for UT2004. The ECE torrent is available, alongside direct downloads provided by BeyondUnreal. Rereleased alongside, the Game DVD bundles eleven of the best community-created mods alongside the new content."

    As seen on Blues News [bluesnews.com] a new demo for UT2k4 has also been released, basically the same as the old one with some engine updates and a few extra maps.

    FYI 3d Gamers [3dgamers.com] always has a torrent up of the files it mirrors.
    • Just wondering, does anyone know if an updated Mac demo is going to be released? I've read a lot about how performance on Powerbooks has improved since the first demo, but I'd like to actually try it before I buy.

        The UT 2K4 demo on my PowerBook (1.5 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9700 w/ 128 MB) performs if anything a little worse than the full UT 2k3 on old PowerBook (400 Mhz, 384 MB RAM, 4 MB VRAM IIRC).

        Obviously it's a bit nicer and doing more (particularly on the open maps featuring vehicles) but from the demo it doesn't seem as aggressively optimised as previous versions. Performance on 'normal' indoor levels is certainly not as fast as UT 2k3 was under OS 9 on less powerful hardware.

      • I dunno about a new demo, but the old demo was somewhat choppy sometimes, especially in the Assault map it came with.

        But, the full version runs fine (except I can't demorec) on my iBook (1 Ghz G4, 640 MB RAM, Radeon 9200 w/32MB VRAM), provided I just keep the detail settings low. But, I can run it at 1024x768 with workable framerates (25-40 fps), or at 800x600 with better framerates. And the demo ran smooth on a dual 1.8 GHz G5 I played it on before as well.

        I really want to try UT2004 on a dual 2.5 G

  • I can't wait until Unreal ED is available for linux. I guess I will have to patiently wait for 2005/06 versions.

      The current version of UnrealEd is done with lots of Win32 code, but I believe they are basing the next version (for Unreal Engine 3) on wxWidgets. That should make it pretty easy for them to port it to linux.

        • so what's the point of using wxWidgets? I mean, if you are still going to use it only in windows, is it better than the native windows support?
        • Fortunatly, Epic has rarely concerned themselves with always doing things in an "economically viable" fashion. They give stuff away for free, lisence things for mod makers, have contests (MSU), hold educational seminars (Unreal University), and all sorts of wonderful stuff. Chances are pretty good that if UED4 is portable, it will happen eventually. Maybe not even because some fans out there would like to see it... I honestly wouldn't be suprised if it happened because one of the Epic guys wanted it himself

          Wrong. Unreal is not just a game, it's also a showcase for a resellable engine. Some of the buyers of that engine want to run it on Linux- including groups like military simulation coders, etc.
          • I don't know why you're fighting over this, apparently there's a very good chance that the next version of the Unreal Engine will have a native version of UnrealED for every platform the games ship on.

    1. The 84 MB is a self-extracting zip file. OS X users CAN download the exe, change it to a zip, open with Stuffit Expander (open with>stuffit expander, the default app will not open the file, so Stuffit must be used, this works, I am on OS X and have successfully installed the new updates), and manually move the content to their UT2004 app folders if they wish to do so before MacSoft gets around to releasing a Mac installer. Just don't move the DLL files (no need on Mac OS X) and you don;t have to worry about overwriting your user.ini.

    I'm sure a similar Linux workaround can happen as well before the Linux version is released, but I don;t know exactly how it would work on Linux.

    2. The ECE update does NOT contain any mods that will ship with the retail version; just the maps, models, vehicles and engine tweaks. If you want the mods that are shipping with the retail version you can download them from their respective sites:

    Most of these mods come with installers (.exe), or are UT4 files (UMod), while I know Red Orchestra has a Mac OS X installer and others can be downloaded as zip archives for manual instilation for OS X and Linux users..

      Linux users can unzip and copy the folder contents into their UT2004 directory to use the new content as well without issue.

      Since we are talking about Linux, there are two highly complex and confusing ways we deal with self-extracting zip files... ;-}

      1. Select the file from a browser, rename it from *.exe to *.zip, double click the zip file as if it were a regular folder.

      2. At a shell prompt, type "unzip filename.exe". (You might need to create a temporary directory to dump the

    • Are there any new Mutators or other things that are in the retail ECE and not in the download?
  • Just look at their rolled-up pant bottoms!

    Also, the skaarj models look like they were rushed a bit, with their oversize claws going through other parts of the model.
