Interview with Leeeroy Jeeenkins

Zonk posted more than 9 years ago | from the he-needs-the-devout-shoulders dept.

Games 71

The hero of the hilarious (though likely staged) World of Warcraft short movie, Leroy Jenkins, has been interviewed by the online games mag Played.ToDeath. The interview covers his internet fame and the state of his guild, among other things. From the article: " PLAYED: So we have to know. Is this rushing in something you do often? BEN S: The rushing itself doesn't happen too often. It happens a little more now when we are joking around. My "Leeroy Jenkins" yell happens far more often. I've been yelling that for about four years. (laughs) "

Actually, the fact that they are linking this shows that they're in touch with what's happening in the world of gaming. That video was hilarious, and also a good way to showcase a common problem of trolls having their way with MMORPGs.

Ditto. What's that clip about?

Re:AFK...Leerooooyyyy!!!!!!!! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12907201)

Well, I am too, but not for the same reason...

It's a staged video of an MMORPG "raid" gone wrong. Basically there's an area in World of Warcraft where you can spawn many little monsters all at once if you run in the room and break "dragon eggs" releasing the "whelplings" inside. You're supposed to avoid them and trigger an event where you kill the caretakers.

The video shows a group discussing strategy (and a real brain-dead one at that, one of the reasons every knows it's staged) before one guy suddenly yells "LEEEERRROOY nnnJENNNNKINS!", runs in, and breaks as many eggs as possible. The rest of the group then runs in and breaks as many eggs as possible.

The main reason everyone knows the video is staged is that the entire group is wearing equipment that drops off a "boss" mob that appears past that point in the very same dungeon. It was filmed to be "funny". It's gone the way of "all your base" - it's just not funny any more.

So, I'm left wondering "huh? Why did Slashdot post this?"

It's a staged video

Says who? And do they have proof? The players bitching after they wiped sounded pretty genuine to me.

Re:AFK...Leerooooyyyy!!!!!!!! (1)

kafka47 (801886) | more than 9 years ago | (#12908314)

If you look at the chat window you can see them counting down.. "5 4 3 2 1... Wipe!" Also, the staging is evident in the swallowed laughter of a few of the characters. The video is hilarious, albeit a bit "niche" - for WoW fans only. :-) /Kafka

Re:AFK...Leerooooyyyy!!!!!!!! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12910377)

if you've played WoW, it's quite obvious that it's most likely staged, for a few reasons:

1) the item they're seeking from the rookery is a cloth item. leeroy is a paladin, thus wearing plate armor.
2) the item in question is from the priest set, and would not be an upgrade for a paladin. leeroy already has his paladin set shoulders, so it would actually be a significant downgrade to take these shoulders.
3) many of the characters (including leeroy) are wearing gear that can only be found after the rookery. in fact, statistically, they're likely to have visited this particular dungeon no fewer than 30-40 times to get all the gear they have. to reach the end of the dungeon, you must pass through the rookery.
4) the numbers make no sense ("32.33, repeating of course"), and even if it were something that could be calculated, that value is most likely far too _low_ for a group with that supposed amount of gear and experience dungeoneering.
5) The skill "Divine Intervention" (which they discuss) kills the paladin who uses it, and makes his target immobile and invulnerable for 30 seconds. Any L60 paladin should be aware of what their skills do.

While it's still possible that it was "legitimate", all of the evidence from the video (and from the P4L website) suggests it's staged.

it's still funny. :)

For some reason they won't let me access the site with internet explorer, and I'm at work, so it's not like I have control over it.

I have no idea why they would be so obnoxious as to simply prohibit a browser from accessing their site- I don't really care if it renders imperfectly as long as I can read it.

Really, what kind of idiot does that sort of thing? Some smug, bearded Unix administrator high on the righteousness of open source?

PLAYED:Thanks for giving us the opportunity to speak with you.
BEN S:Hey, no problem.
PLAYED:Great, Ben. Where are you located at?
BEN S:I'm in Laffayete, Colorado
PLAYED:How long have you been playing WoW?
BEN S:I've been playing it since open beta.
PLAYED:Since open beta?
BEN S:I pretty much got it right when it came out.
PLAYED:What drew you to it, are you a big fan of Blizzard?
BEN S:Yeah. I've always played a lot of Blizzard stuff, they usually make pretty quality games.
PLAYED:Is WoW your favorite of the bunch?
BEN S:It's hard to say. I've played a lot of everything but so far WoW has been pretty good.
PLAYED:Do you play any other MMOGS?
BEN S:I don't currently, but I have played others in the past.
PLAYED:Which titles?
BEN S:Shadowbane was the one I got the most into. I played some Ragnarok online, and Lineage II for a month or two. Back in the day, I played a little Ultima Online.
PLAYED:Cool.
PLAYED:So you've been playing WoW from the beginning. What aspect of the game do you enjoy the most?
BEN S:Just screwing with people, mostly (laughs)
PLAYED:So you play on a PVP server then (laughing)?
BEN S:Yeah.
PLAYED:So what level is Leeroy?
BEN S:Leeroy is 60.
PLAYED:What is his PVP rank, currently?
BEN S:He's a sergeant currently, I haven't got a chance to do a whole lot of PVP yet.
PLAYED:Sergeant is still nice, I haven't even made grunt yet.
PLAYED:We are really looking forward to the Battleground patch.
PLAYED:Hopefully the level 60's won't pick on us too much. We are all around level 40.
BEN S:Yeah, at level 40 it's gonna be rough.
PLAYED:We assume that Leeroy is you main, how many alts do you have?
BEN S:I have a couple low-level alts. A couple of only level 10. In total I have actually made ... 9 characters. All those, except leeroy and one other, are below level 30. I have a level 60 Tauren on a separate server, too.
PLAYED:Nice.
PLAYED:What occupation is Leeroy currently?
BEN S:He's a miner/engineer.
PLAYED:That's the hardest one, really.
PLAYED:We assume you are still in league with The Pals 4 Life?
BEN S:Yeah, we still do our stuff. (laughs) I did get kicked out of the guild for five minutes after this instance.
PLAYED:(laughs)
PLAYED:How many people are in P4L?
BEN S:Technically, we have around a hundred players in the guild.
PLAYED:Wow, that's quite a few.
BEN S:Yeah, but only 25 or so are really active. Most of them are alts.
PLAYED:You've been with P4L from the beginning then?
BEN S:Yeah. It partially existed before we started WoW.
PLAYED:How much would you say you play a week? To get to level sixty you must be playing a good amount.
BEN S:Yeah. I play a lot really, I'm currently unemployed so that helps (laughs)
PLAYED:(laughs)
BEN S:(laughing) Yeah, if you know of any good jobs, send them my way.
PLAYED:We'll keep our eye out for you.
BEN S:On average, I play about four or five hours a day. Some days I take a break.
PLAYED:Let's talk about the video. What inspired the name of your character, Leeroy Jenkins? Is he a character from a movie or something you made up?
BEN S:It was pretty much made up. I was sitting around with a few guild-mates drinking forties ...
PLAYED:(laughs) That's where all great things come from - drinking forties with your buddies.
BEN S:Right. So we start throwing out name for each other and Leeroy Jenkins popped out. I like the name because it was fun to yell.
PLAYED:(laughs)
PLAYED:You know the video has spread all over the Internet by now. We had even seen references to the video at E3 this year. Now that everyone has seen it, some people want to know if the video was staged. Was it?
BEN S:(laughs) We want people to make that decision themselves. It seems more fun that way.
PLAYED:(laughs) We are certainly happy to leave it a mystery.
PLAYED:So we saw the video just a few days ago, and it seems like it grew phenomenally fast. Everyone at the office was passing the link around and having a good time with it.
BEN S:It grew really crazy, we didn't expect that.
PLAYED:We think you have achieved cult-status. Somewhere up there with the Star Wars kid. Bam! Overnight Internet fame.
PLAYED:Which instance is this we are seeing in the video? Where it is?
BEN S:That was Upper Black Rock Spire. Not too far in - It's called the Rookery.
PLAYED:Were those dragons?
BEN S:Yeah, those were little dragon eggs.
PLAYED:What was the mission - collect as many eggs as possible?
BEN S:In the back there is a obelisk that you can interact with. A boss that has a chance to drop the devout shoulders I was looking for.
PLAYED:Did you finally get the devout shoulders?
BEN S:They are definitely level 60 shoulder-pads, I haven't acquired them yet. I'm currently wearing Valor.
PLAYED:So we have to know. Is this rushing in something you do often?
BEN S:The rushing itself doesn't happen too often. It happens a little more now when we are joking around. My "Leeroy Jenkins" yell happens far more often. I've been yelling that for about four years. (laughs)
PLAYED:Cool. I get accused of being that guy. My character is a tank and I rush in a little more often than some of my guild-mates might like. I just can't help it. (laughs)
PLAYED:Do you still catch hell from your guild over this?
BEN S:The guild has gotten pretty tired of it recently, mostly because of the random tells and people begging for guild invites.
PLAYED:We imagine this video has generated some publicity for your guild.
BEN S:Yeah, The problem is that we aren't looking to grow the guild. We are mostly all people who know each other.
PLAYED:What server do you guys play on?
BEN S:Laughing Skull
PLAYED:We had an opportunity to meet one of your guild-mates at E3 this year. Did he fill you in on the popularity of the video at the show?
BEN S:Yeah. He told me that people at the Blizzard booth noticed his shirt and randomly introduced themselves.
PLAYED:That's how we ran into him, honestly.
BEN S:He said that most of the Blizzard employees said they had seen and loved the video.
PLAYED:I'm sure it was getting passed along their office left and right.
BEN S:I had heard that Microsoft showed the video on one of their big screens at one point.
PLAYED:Wow!
BEN S:We heard that there was even a group of people that made up a set of t-shirts with quotes from the video on the back.
PLAYED:Absolutely. While we were waiting at the door the first day we ran into a group of guys with shirts. There was a graphic of you sitting on the ground, AFK. They had apparently created the image and had them pressed onto a t-shirt the night before.
BEN S:(laughs) I have seen people using a sound-bite of my voice on the forums.
PLAYED:So after your horrible in-game death, did you run back to get your body or did you use the spirit healer?
BEN S:We actually used a soul-stone a little ways back, so it was no problem.
PLAYED:Of course. What was the deal with the chicken?
BEN S:We don't want anyway to take the wrong way, but you know... forties and fried chicken seem to work.
PLAYED:(laughs)
BEN S:But seriously, KFC chicken really is our guild's favorite.
PLAYED:Undoubtedly. How do you plan on using your new-found fame?
BEN S:It's been nice, now that more people know who I am. I'm starting to look around the gaming industry for possible employment opportunities.
PLAYED:Right on. We know that Blizzard was handing out flyers looking for GM positions. Maybe you should drop them a line.
BEN S:Yeah, I'm currently trying to get in contact with Blizzard. I can imagine how much e-mail they have been getting with people pretending to be the real Leeroy Jenkins.
PLAYED:We can vouch for the real thing, if you ever need us to. Do you guys plan on doing a sequel to the Leeroy video?
BEN S:Lots of people have asked for a sequel, so we will probably do one. We have actually made a couple different types of videos that are already up on the P4L website.
PLAYED:We will have to stop by and take a look. Is there more Leeroy to be had?
BEN S:I was unable to play for about a month and that's actually when the guild started making these videos. They are all pretty funny.
PLAYED:We would love to see a sequel. Any shout-outs before we wrap it up?
BEN S:Sure. All the P4L guys. Good old Abduhl with the calculations. Velkin, QuixyStyx, and Rocnar are a few of my buddies on other servers. Come visit our site (http://thepalsforlife.com/ [thepalsforlife.com] sometime.

Damnit, never any modpoints when I need them.

I completely agree with you on both points. It is abnoxious, and it probably was some overzealous firefox zealot who probably works on this website in exchange for college credit.

Not to bright to turn away 93% of the internet because you can't lower yourself to writing an if/then statement. Fortunately, this stupidity extends to their coding. Turn off javascript ("active scripting" on security tab of internet options) and it displays the page.

I love Firefox, but jeez. What a bunch of jackasses.

since you asked :

Interview with "Leeroy Jenkins" by the played.todeath editors
By now, most of you MMORPG players have seen the Leeroy Jenkins video. If you are one of the four people that haven't, we would suggest checking it out before proceeding.

After meeting one of Leeroy's guild mates at E3, we scored an exclusive interview with the man himself. Two of our own staffers, William Everett (age 19) and Patrick Hufford (age 32) caught up with Ben S (age 24) to get the skinny on Leeroy and Ben's experience with WoW.

Still Funny (1, Interesting)

Primis (71749) | more than 9 years ago | (#12906953)

I don't care what anyone says. I don't care if other people are sick of it, or don't think it's funny. And I don't care in the least if it's staged (which is likely is). And I know a bunch of ya'll will post about how you think it's not funny, or don't get it, or ocmplain that it's here...

But every time I watch that video and I get to that defining moment, I am sent into a fit of laughter.

It's like Bubb Rubb ("It goes... WHOO HOOOOOO!!!"), it never gets old and it confirms the internet's purpose and place in life for me.

Okay, I just saw it for the first time. A few thoughts.

1) This is a big deal? This is just like 10,000 other group parties in the game. or any other game for that matter.

2) Nobody actually sits there and talks and talks and talks about strategy. Just dumb.

3) Teamspeak ruins good games.

4) This piece of crap made it to G4 and Slashdot in the same week? Is this because Americans are stupid or has everyone just devolved recently?

Never been in an MC run I see.

Teamspeak ruins good games.

Teamspeak makes teamwork possible in games that do no provide adequate voice communication.

Not trolling, they screwed it up. (2, Informative)

sinner0423 (687266) | more than 9 years ago | (#12907055)

Once you hear the leader ask for calculation for a chance of survival, it completely shits on the whole video/skit - otherwise the rest is completely plausible and funny.

There's a fine line between humor & total crap, and I believe that single line about survival crossed it. Luckily the 2 things that Leeroy says manages to save it from being tossed in to the black hole of really bad WoW player movies which are all over the internet.

Re:Not trolling, they screwed it up. (1)

Temporal (96070) | more than 9 years ago | (#12907865)

Who says it was supposed to appear real? I interpreted the video as a parody skit which never intended to be realistic. The line you're complaining about was intended to be over-the-top. That's the whole point.

It's definitely staged (2, Informative)

Toxygen (738180) | more than 9 years ago | (#12907364)

If you know a little about the game mechanics there's no way you could think this would actually happen. The instance they're doing is one of, if not the hardest before you start doing molten core. The idea that a full group of 15 players could all get to level 56+ without knowing simple things like:

1) You never agro anything unless the group leader has appointed you to be the puller.

2) If someone (usually a rogue) agros a mob group way up front and out of range of the rest, you let him die so the mobs don't agro your whole group.

3) Divine intervention sacrifices the life of the paladin and creates a sheild through which NO action can be taken.

4) Fear is never a good idea unless you're 100% certain the mob won't/can't train into another group.

The idea that anybody can get close to 60 without figuring out these basic principles is laughable. 15 people is just downright impossible.

It's still funny though.

While I completely agree with your sentiment, that's just not the case in WoW.

For example: I have met many a lvl 60 Warrior in WoW who will not use "taunt", and don't know what holding aggro is all about.

There's just alot of players who rode the gravy train of their guildies to epic level. Fine by me, those are the 60s that I butcher in PvP.

I was playing with a Shaman who didn't use totems or heal. He had NO idea what he was doing. I asked him why he never used them, he said "OMG I DUN NED DEM YET!"... That's half the damn class.. The other half being "hit things with blunt objects" of course. I'll admit that as a hunter I make my fair share of mistakes. I don't keep my pet under control very well in tight spaces, and have gotten my groups killed a few times.

Re:It's definitely staged (0)

You're ignoring the fact that WoW attracts players even dumber than most MMORPGs. That's not to say that all WoW players are dumb, but the worst ones are spectacularly dumb.

At least on DAOC the dumb ones are still coherent.

Re:It's definitely staged (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12909274)

Well yes, but DAOC only has 5 players.

Re:It's definitely staged (1)

Ayaress (662020) | more than 9 years ago | (#12909399)

1. Having been in enough WoW parties, many people DO NOT know this. Level 60's - hell, one person in my guild has three level 60's in different classes - don't all realize simple facts and get entire parties annihilated. 2. Yes, unless you're in a casual and friendly guild and don't like to let your friends get gangraped by dragons. 3. I've found divine intervention to be pretty useful. Anything that can keep an engineer alive long enough to break out the jumper cables and you can save the whole raid. Fein Death works better, but not all engineers are hunters (and not all hunters are engineers). 4. The fight was in a confined room, so feared mobs aren't going anywhere. The whole room aggros when you start fighting anyway, so no point in worrying about adds. Yes, it was definitely staged, but for other reasons. Never underestimate the capacity for stupidity in players of any game, especially when leveling is fairly easy.

Re:It's definitely staged (1)

lowmagnet (646428) | more than 9 years ago | (#12909433)

2) is definitely true. This is also why hunters are generally the best pullers. They can run out far, pull a mob, and if they over-pull, feign death and the mobs run back. But nobody wants them in their group because most hunters are morons.

4) in a dungeon will get you wiped 80% of the time, as will idiots pulling 6-8 mobs at once.

OMGBBQ!! N00bs! (1)

Quadfreak0 (624555) | more than 9 years ago | (#12907587)

Guess the people at "Played" dont get to spend much time in their games. I sure hope they just had some stock filler questions to pass the time/for lack of better questions.

The best part is when they asked about the devout shoulders. It doesnt seem like they know the devout set is a cloth set.

" PLAYED:Hopefully the level 60's won't pick on us too much. We are all around level 40."

" PLAYED:What occupation is Leeroy currently?
BEN S:He's a miner/engineer.
PLAYED:That's the hardest one, really. " ...
" PLAYED:Which instance is this we are seeing in the video?

Re:OMGBBQ!! N00bs! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#12907881)

Stock filler? Indeed! This one was by far the best...

PLAYED:How long have you been playing WoW? BEN S:I've been playing it since open beta. PLAYED:Since open beta?

Why ask the question he just answered?

I'm sorry "PLAYED", can you not read what this dude has hammered out on his extra-large keys with his dogpaw that grew deformed after too much self-abuse?
PLAYED: "Too much self abuse?"
This is a 100% crock. Someone knows someone who knows someone who knows the poster here. Why does this keep happening? Isn't anyone in charge anymore?

And guys. Screaming "Leeeeeeeroy Jeeeeenkins" or whatever is NOT funny. COMEDY is funny. That. Is. Not.

Actually... (1)

Moraelin (679338) | more than 9 years ago | (#12908343)

Dunno, that whole planning session got me pretty much on Leroy's side.

From my experience with MMOs, if you can summarize your strategy into a simple sentence like "ok, you pull around this corner, you tank, and you heal the tank" or even "ok, everyone take the boss out first", your chances are probably good.

But moment you actually need to spend 5 minutes describing a plan that requires perfect coordination and timing, it's time to rethink it all or take another mission, because you _are_ going to get wiped out. If not in this fight, in the next one.

Basically you _need_ to have a safety margin for when things don't run as planned. A player loses connection. Or lag hits. Or the whole group is hit by the dark side of the pseudo-random number generator and pulls a string of misses. (Chances are with WoW's population, there's someone somewhere right now missing 20 attacks in a row on an equal level opponent.) Etc. There are _lots_ of things which aren't as deterministic as they may seem.

So IMHO if you can summarize it in a simple one-phrase plan and feel confident about it, chances are you have that safety margin. You have room to improvise and fill in the blank when the feces hits the ventilation device. If you need to come up with a two page plan requiring perfect timing and coordination, you don't have that margin. You can't improvise anything without screwing the plan, anyway.

_Any_ battle that actually requires that kinda planning is a symptom of being in the wrong group. Either you're doomed anyway, or you're grouped with people completely lacking clue. (By that occasionally including the complete control freak team leader who needs to have everyone executing some precise script, even when it's not needed.)

So, well, personally I actually was on Leroy's side there. The whole thing looked like something _I_ might have done in a situation like that.
