Metal Gear Solid 4 Not the End 39

1up gaming is reporting that while Metal Gear Solid 4 may be the end of the road for Solid Snake, the series will live on. "The Metal Gear series is one of the most successful (and profitable) in modern gaming. Would it surprise you, then, to learn that Metal Gear Solid 4 might not be the end of the franchise after all, despite recent comments from series creator Hideo Kojima that led some to speculate MGS4 would be the series' last? Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, MGS4 producer Ryan Peyton confirmed that the series will live on after Guns of the Patriots. But while we may see more games with 'Metal Gear' in the title, we may not see 'Solid' in there as well."

MGS 2 was the "last Metal Gear Solid." MGS 3 was the "last Metal Gear Solid." Kojima is the Barbra Streisand of video games.

But even Hideo Kojima said this was HIS last one. Would the future one live up to our expectations without Kojima?

Actually, there are 19 of them [wikipedia.org], assuming you count everything with "Final Fantasy" in the title.

      Yes, it's still absurd.
  • Will someone please tell me that the first line of this article is just speculation on the part of the editors and not a massive "Snake dies" MGS4 spoiler?
  • Metal Gear Solid without Solid Snake isn't Metal Gear Solid.

Of course The End isn't in Metal Gear Solid 4. He died in 3, and that was a massive prequel. (Plus, he was already pretty ancient by then.)

But I wouldn't mind if #5 is a full blown Metal Gear Raiden.

For all the hate about Raiden, I thought that it was only due to the shock of the size of his role, and hate about his appearance. His character wasn't fully fleshed out, so I don't know if I hate him for his youthfully naive attitude to the missions. I found the playability and greater athleticism made him a good character to play, compared to the slow as molasses Snake. It was annoying to fight Liquid as he jumps all over the room, while Snake barely trots along.

Snake's greatest attribute is his gruff character, and bewildered comments ("..."). If the same level of character development was spent on Raiden, maybe he wouldn't be such a universally hated character in the Metal Gear world.
    • I'm hoping he's more interesting in this new one. I have to say I was glad to see the portion of the trailers when the ninja's robotic mask gizmo drops back to reveal his face. It looks like he may have lost his jaw or something too, which would add to his character, in my opinion. He needs to be less of a pretty boy to appeal to the American market.
    • Hideo Kojima has said Raiden only existed to show Snake from another perspective to the gamer. I think it worked pretty well, MGS2 is my favorite of the series.
  • Milk the cow, milk the cow... its nectar tastes sweet and will make you wealthy. Of course Konami isn't going to end this series, Capcom isn't giving any break to Resident Evil either and Nintendo has no intention to put The Legend of Zelda to rest; these are not flagships anymore, they've become pillar supporting the whole company. They're all too afraid to even try without them because it might collapse on their head, there's no more room for taking risks, it has to pay off immediately and, sadly, they ca
  • Seriously, only anime fanatics would forgive the wussiness of Raiden and the laughably byzantine and melodramatic plot.
  • What? A financially successful title is going to have another sequel after all? They're not going to stop making products based on a concept to which users have shown a glimmer of attachment? They're going to find some way of explaining a continuation of a popular storyline after a seemingly final conclusion? Even if some of the earlier chapters have shown a risky disregard to quality? Color me shocked! Amazed, really. Will the wonders never cease...

  • I think that a MGS without Hideo Kojima and without Snake will suck a lot, look Snake's Revenge (that game sucked a lot) and MGS2 with Raven.
