jones_supa (887896) writes 'Since the release of the extremely successful Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, rumors about PC — and later also an Xbox One and PlayStation 4 — version have been floating around. Now it's official: Grand Theft Auto V will be released on Windows PC and Xbox One, in addition to PlayStation 4, this fall, publisher Rockstar Games announced today with a trailer. A post on Rockstar Newswire tells us that the ports will offer visual and technical improvements such as "increased draw distances, finer texture details, denser traffic and enhanced resolutions." All of the new GTA Online content that has been created and released since launch will be available also on the modern platforms. The PC version will exclusively include a video editor to allow players to put together their own clips of in-game action.'

Re:Steamy piss (0)

I agree. The main problem with GTA V is that there's just not enough DRM. Rockstar is going to have to add more restrictive DRM to get me interested.

Saying that there "isn't enough DRM" in GTA is like saying there isn't enough rape in Game of Thrones!

Not just a mediocre game, but one filled with DRM. Either that or you're stuck on locked-down consoles. Why people put up with this nonsense is beyond me.

. Either that or you're stuck on locked-down consoles. Why people put up with this nonsense is beyond me.

Because some of us just like to put in a game and play it--not make some fucking stand, not spend hours figuring out what kind of DRM it has or doesn't have, not trying to figure out if we have the right videocard to play it or adjusting sliders to get a decent framerate, or downloading it forever over a low bandwidth connection and worrying about fucking data caps.

Some of us just want to pop the disc in our console and play.

Indeed, I am really looking forward to GTA5 for PC but it all depends on how awful the DRM is. I skipped GTA4 because of the stupid Rockstar Social Club and driver level DRM bullshit. Come on Rockstar, take my money and don't screw me for being honest.

PC version moderately exciting (2)

drinkypoo (153816) | about 4 months ago | (#47202563)

There have been a lot of really cool mods for earlier PC versions of GTA, so I'm pretty interested in this. Once it's been cracked, I might even buy it on sale, and install the cracked version.

The lack of draw distance really is a major annoyance in the Xbox 360 version, so a fair number of people probably will rebuy the game. However, the online is extremely limp. It only takes a couple of weeks to do everything worth doing online.

Re:PC version moderately exciting (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 months ago | (#47202657)

I have vice city and san andreas for the PC and anytime they release their games for PC it is almost a promise it is going to be better. However there were numerous flaws in those games that didn't appear in the console versions.

I would be cautious when V comes out for PC to see if any bugs or flaws exist, I am not sure if they just rush the games for them to be available for PC or what it is they fail to do. But their games are better on PC.

I kind off lost interest in the games, after seeing nothing but nerds and geeks playing it. Nothing against those people but the game had mostly street like players.

I'm optimistic, since the PS4 and XboxOne are very similar to PC's, that PC ports in general will be decent compared to previous generations. Assuming you don't have an axe to grind against console games in general anyway.

Re:PC version moderately exciting (1)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 months ago | (#47203425)

There have been a lot of really cool mods for earlier PC versions of GTA, so I'm pretty interested in this.

I was extremely interested in GTA-V, for a good six months (3-4 months longer than typical for me personally)

Sadly the PC version is 13 months late to the party now. I'm not exactly sure why I should reward rockstar with my $60 when for over a year they out right refused to sell me their product as a PC gamer.

It's really too bad they wouldn't sell me their product at the time we all wanted it. Waiting until after all the excitement around the game dies down, and even so very late as where the professional game reviewers are no longer even pandering to "spoiler warnings" and posting complete play through videos - it isn't even possible to enjoy discovering the game world on our own now.

This behavior I will not reward with my money.

Re:PC version moderately exciting (1)

Blaskowicz (634489) | about 4 months ago | (#47203735)

You mean you care so much about this game so as to watch long videos of people playing it, then you're pissed because you're spoiled? What about not watching the videos. I didn't watch the videos. Simple, done. I still won't play the game but that's because I won't buy a new PC to play it.

Re:PC version moderately exciting (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 months ago | (#47204709)

No I didn't have to watch any videos to have most all of my circle of gaming friends to go on talking about the game (be it from personal experience or from online videos) to have already spoiled a good deal of it.

And no I don't blame my friends for that, it isn't their fault I am in a position to having to buy both a PS4 and GTA V to experience the game, and that cost simply isn't worth it to me factoring in how little expected usage a PS4 would see from me.

My PC only gamer friends have already pretty much all resigned to the fact the game would never be released on PC, and with the assumption they couldn't play it didn't mind hearing the story.

Like I said, for around six months I was *very* excited to play this game, but now it almost feels like I have even if only second hand. That takes a huge bite out of what I find most fun about story based games such as this.

Oh, and to this day I still haven't watched any of the online play through vids, despite having since assumed the PC may actually never see a port (It's been what, 8 months now, where rockstar has said NOTHING about a PC port in the works?)

Meanwhile, promised DLC for existing customers... (4, Interesting)

AugstWest (79042) | about 4 months ago | (#47202573)

...still hasn't appeared.

Eight+ months after the game came out, there's still no new single-player content. Why? Because all of their development efforts are going into getting the game onto new consoles.

I understand the business sense of this, but still -- this situation is the exact opposite of what they promised when they released the game. So they make some huge announcements at/before E3, and still there's no mention of it.

A huge chunk of their customer base already has the game for earlier consoles. Why would they buy it for the new one if they've already played all the content?

Re:Meanwhile, promised DLC for existing customers. (2)

danudwary (201586) | about 4 months ago | (#47202619)

I'm sure the DLC team are the same people as the port team. One of the biggest-selling games of all time surely couldn't work on two wildly different aspects of the game at a time.

They promised new single-player content extending the story of the main game. The DLC they've released so far has all been new weapons and skins for GTA Online.

THE SHINY!

Re:Meanwhile, promised DLC for existing customers. (0)

I understand the business sense of this

No, you obviously dont.

but still -- this situation is the exact opposite of what they promised when they released the game.

Businesses lie to get idiots to give them money.

If they release the most awful pile of crap DLC you'll still jump at it (pre-order too I bet) and try to justify the delay & cost.
If you want them to change how they do things DONT BUY THEIR CRAP, its that simple and you can survive without it.

Re:Meanwhile, promised DLC for existing customers. (1)

And then you wonder why the developers keep favoring the console versions.

Big deal (2, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 months ago | (#47202697)

I have no respect for a company which became successful and famous due to a game that was originally designed for the PC (the DOS version of the original GTA), but has now completely forgotten its roots and either releases (a) a shit PC port of their console-focused games (e.g. GTA IV), (b) doesn't release a PC port at all (Red Dead Redemption), or (c) takes their sweet fucking time to release the port at all when they should have had a PC version ready to go at the time the console versions were originally released. And yet gamers rewards these companies treating the fans that made them successful in the first place by giving them the most shit of attention and support. Fuck 'em.

GTA was by DMA Design (now Rockstar North), Red Dead Redemption was by Rockstar San Diego (formerly Angel Studios), completely unrelated companies / teams, although currently they have the same owner. Interestingly enough, DMA's breakthrough hit was not GTA nor was it on DOS, it was Lemmings on Amiga. However, from the start they were a very console friendly company, releasing versions for NES, SNES and Sega and published through Nintendo exclusively for a time (Unirally, Body Harvest). All before GTA 1 came out.

However in 1999, two years after GTA, DMA was bought out by Take Two Interactive (owner of the "Rockstar" brand) and probably lost a fair amount of control over things like release platforms. So I think it's pretty much understandable.

Re:Big deal (1)

rwa2 (4391) | about 4 months ago | (#47203649)

Yes, that makes a lot of sense! GTA3:SA was pretty brilliant... I assume that was made by the RS San Diego / Angel Studios group? If so, I might like to check out Red Dead Redemption... my favorite GTA games always had a good shot at the time capsule thing going.

While the graphics and production values of GTA4 were pretty high, the gameplay, variety, and story were pretty crap in comparison to the stuff they had you doing in GTA3:SA. From the reivews, it looks like GTA5 is more along that vein, so maybe I'll pick it up on Steam when it hits firesale status... and upgrade my CPU to better match my GPU.

IIRC, all the GTA series (inc for definite, SA) came from Rockstar North, with the exception of the *City Stories series, which was made by Rockstar Leeds. As for Chinatown Wars and Advance, i have no idea.

However, Midnight Club came from Angel Studios/R* San Diego, of which, Midnight Club 3 was my favourite.

Will I, as a PC gamer, be able to play online with my console playing buddies? I will literally throw money at the Rockstar offices over this.

There are many significant issues with this, actually. And it's not about linking up PSN, Xbox Live and whatever other systems together. (That's the easy part!)

The biggest issue is the disparity in controls. Secondary is disparity in graphics - every system renders the same thing slightly differently, and you can easily bet there will be tons of exploits for glitches on each platform to gain an advantage. Like a spot may cause a framerate drop on Xbox One, making it a good spot to get an advantage. Or likewise other similar problem spots on other platforms. Engineering these out is extremely difficult and can turn an otherwise fun evening of gaming into a frustrating mess.

(On a PC, things are generally varied enough that glitches like these aren't super exploitable).

Re:Can I play with my friends? (1)

timeOday (582209) | about 4 months ago | (#47204335)

PC/Console disparities would certainly ruin competitive play, but not cooperative play. (Does GTA have that?)

PC has had those issues forever. In Halo CE people with crap graphics cards had a distinct advantage in that their card couldn't properly render the invisibility cloak so it was much easier to see.

It's technically possible. War Thunder just arrived for PS4 and there is cross-platform gameplay. PS4 players are easily denoted in-game by the * next to their name which doesn't do them any favors since the general consensus is that keyboard/mouse controls are far superior to controller.

Denser traffic? (1)

cje (33931) | about 4 months ago | (#47202797)

While some of the proposed changes (e.g., better draw distance, more detail, etc.) aim to make the game better on modern hardware, it seems like adding things like "denser traffic" would have the effect of changing the gameplay itself. While denser traffic would certainly make the game's Southern California setting a little bit more realistic, I'm not sure that it would make the game more enjoyable. In particular, it seems like a change of this nature could make some of the game's high-speed chase missions and side events into a big pain in the ass.

The fact that you can do something doesn't necessarily mean that you should.

Re:Denser traffic? (1, Funny)

Yeah, I think I have quite enough random cars jumping in front of me as it is. Of course, if you're on foot and need a vehicle, they simply do not spawn near you. But get in a car, and suddenly the streets are full. I wonder if they're referring to the way traffic spawns when you're not in it, say, as seen from a chopper?
I'm glad they're porting it to PC, though. I'd like to get my roommate into it, and be able to play at the same time. But I'd really prefer that they fixed some of the problems they already have, (freezing issues, few Survivals, etc...).

Not everybody needs a $2000 PC. For no more than the price of an Xbox One, you can build a gaming PC [slashdot.org] . Or did you mean "$2000 PC" in the sense that PC multiplayer tends to be oriented towards LAN instead of same-screen?

Re:Hairyfeet recommends a $500 PC that got game (0)

The123king (2395060) | about 4 months ago | (#47205347)

No, i meant a $2000 PC.

Either way, a $500 PC will be woefully outdated within the same timeframe as a next-gen console is released and then phased out. However, the biggest advantage is that the entire (Windows-based) back catalogue is (mostly) backwards, and forwards compatible with newer machines. On the other hand, consoles usually live long lives anyway, with new games trickling out for old platforms. Therefore, your ~12 year old PS2 could still be put to use with new titles. The other advantage to consoles, is you know the game will work on it. No worrying if your graphics card is too crap, no worrying if you'll have enough RAM. If it says PS3, or XBox 360, etc on it, it will work on that console, no matter how old or young.

My base PC with a 6-core AMD processor, 8 gigs of RAM, two terabyte hard drive array and a GeForce 550 Ti cost me $600 to put together. It played everything just fine. The card died last month and I replaced it with a 750 Ti that cost me $160 and it plays everything at HD resolution with frames WELL over 60fps now; it's gross how fantastically a high-low end PC can perform.

I would go as far as to say if you're spending more than $1000 on a desktop, you're probably overcompensating for something. Unless you're running 4K ultra giga HD graphics, most rigs priced over $1000 are probably wasting a LOT of resources for any game out on the market right now.

A good gaming PC is about $850.

$100 for MS Windows license
$150 for a good CPU
$50 for RAM
$80 for a good motherboard
$60 for a good PSU
$80 for a good case
$100 for a SSD
$80 for a magnetic drive (to backup that SSD to)
$150 for a gfx card

Adjust to taste. You could spend up to $250 for a powerful video card, or as little as $100 for a more bargain-side card. CPUs can also be scaled down to an $80 model or up to a $250 model without getting too much out of the sweet spot. The sweet spot for both the CPU and video card is around $150 +/- $25. You get very good bang for the buck at that price point.

If money is truly an issue, go with a 10k RPM SATA drive instead of the SSD. Performance will be good enough for a budget machine.

So you could probably whittle the above down to $650 and still be able to play the latest games at modest frame rates (24-36fps).

Actually at $400, the hardware is a damn good deal.

I'd agree if it did anything but play PS3 games right now, which (thanks to the developers) it really doesn't.

For another two hundred dollars you can have a desktop that does anything you want it to, including playing these multiplatform games at better resolutions and at better framerates.

Playstation 3 vintage (0)

I didn't know the consumption and hunger for new things was this bad. Playstation 4 and X-Box One are new platforms, but Playstation 3 is not? Is it vintage?

Indeed, hardware hasn't progressed as much in this latest iteration of consoles and the increase in hardware power doesn't lead to as big a change in graphics as the previous iteration. I think Sony and MS should have waited 2-4 more years before releasing this time round.

To play old rehashed upscaled PS3 games.

I'm quite sure it won't be upscaled.

You don't consider the PS4 a higher-resolution rehash of the PS3? The differences in what they do are not fundamental.

The PS3 is a cell based piece (of shit) custom Sony hardware.

The PS4 is a PC in a console case, same as the last two X-boxes.

Now console ports have a chance of not sucking, for at least a year or two, until the consoles they were written for are hopelessly obsolete.

Like the Path of Exile post... (1)

...I have to ask: Why is THIS game item worthy of being here? There are so many game related "news" items in the world. The ones that land here are truly mystifying to me. People care about GTA V? I was under the impression that series peaked with "San Andreas". If someone was posting the latest Colossal Cave news, or maybe Daleks, or Rats for the Burroughs B-20, THEN I would understand.

Just in case your actually being serious (and if you are, please seek help).

I going to guess that it may have something to do with the fact that it's already sold 27 million copies on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and broke six world videogame sales records [guinnessworldrecords.com] in its launch week alone--making it the best-selling videogame of 2013 by a WIDE margin.

I'm actually being spurious. Spuriously, though, if you listen to numbers like that Guinness link you posted, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull was the biggest Indiana Jones movie. The publishers of GTA are certainly powerful enough to get records criteria custom-formed in order to ensure that they "break" multiple records, thereby assuring ad copy and talking points that make their expensive project appear successful in print ads and job-preserving PowerPoint presentations. Tetris, anyone?

Finally, a PC version! (1)

I was beginning to give up hope. GTA V is one of the most impressive games I've played. Even just wandering around exploring the landscape is damned impressive.

Hopefully Rockstar doesn't mess up the PC version like they did with GTA 4.

There is nothing wrong with GTA IV. People didnt understand how to tweak it and failed to realize the hardware needed to run it. Like Crysis, in the long run im glad they went the route they did, as we enjoyed the game much longer than we would have otherwise.

GTA IV PC had lots of problems. Windows Live, performance issues, Social Club issues.

I heard that the initial release of GTA IV PC version was also very buggy. These days, it has been patched to be relatively stable.

I think I hear a shitstorm blowing in (1)

slashmydots (2189826) | about 4 months ago | (#47204373)

I never looked into it because if it's not on a PC, I'm not interested, but what the hell? They released the #1 game of all time on outdated systems and it doesn't run on the new ones? Why didn't they just spend their hundreds of millions hiring people to stand outside Gamestop with a sign that says "don't buy the PS4 or Xbox One." It'd probably do slightly less damage to console sales than what they actually did. I know, I know, development times and hardware availability and SDK release dates and blah blah blah. That's why they should have just made it for the PC in the first place.

Wishful thinking: Upgrade (1)

Sandman1971 (516283) | about 4 months ago | (#47204543)

I see no mention of an available upgrade from PS3/XBox360 to PS4/XboxOne like some developers did late last year. Wishful thinking I guess.

More exciting game coming soon (1)

The Crew [ubi.com] .

Will it really be as open-world as they claim, with the only "walls" being Canada, Mexico and oceans?

It's bad, but GTA4 is worse. (0)

Sales mean nothing, it's naive and childish to think they do. All the side objectives and activities in this game are meaningless and you earn nothing for doing them, you'll constantly be missing out on characterization because of the switching mechanic, they seriously just expect you to play this over hyped drivel for the novelty of it. Many cite their faithful rip off of Los Angeles as an endearing element, but that's obviously where most of the budget went. The cops spawn in front of you for too long, the AI aimbots and is just cheaty, the world is too big and too empty for its own good. As a GTA game, this is as far from the standards and concepts set in the real GTA games of the PS2 days.

And I have to ask, who here or anywhere can honestly say that after playing this they were happy with the $60 they spent on this crap? Red Dead Redemption and GTA4 were the very definition of sub-par and betrayal respectively.

What I'm saying is this game sucks and Rockstar have long been as dead as Bioware and it's not up for debate.
